Alfa Laval releases recommendation paper: Sustainable Cities: It is time to implement at scale!

Alfa Laval gathered stakeholders from across the value chain to formulate a collective recommendation paper with ten actions on how to make the cities more energy efficient and less dependent on fossil fuel.

 

Energy efficiency in cities is paramount in overcoming global climate and energy challenges. According to the COP28 agreement, our energy efficiency efforts must double by 2030 to meet the Paris Agreement targets. Action and implementation at scale are essential to turn this awareness into reality, and this is where Sustainable Cities come into play.

With cities accounting for two-thirds of global energy consumption and more than 70% of annual global carbon emissions, improving energy efficiency in heating and cooling systems, integrating sector coupling, and creating partnerships across the value chain can significantly impact reaching net zero. The solutions are available today, but the challenge lies in implementing them at scale.

To address this, seven key players came together, bringing perspectives from across the value chain, including Euroheat & Power, Engie, E.ON, Kraftringen, Ramboll, Aurubis, and Alfa Laval. The outcome: ten recommendations were identified for cities, industry peers, and policymakers on how to accelerate the energy transition, positioning cities as arenas for change towards a more sustainable future.

COP28 was a starting point for creating awareness around Sustainable cities. Now it is time to bring these learnings into action, and to effectively implement these practices on a larger scale. Making the cities more energy efficient and less fossil fuel dependent in relation to heating and cooling is pivotal for the climate transition and to support cities in reducing their emissions. That is why we brought together stakeholders from sectors across the value chain, because we need collaboration to successfully drive change,” says Thomas Møller, President Energy Division, Alfa Laval.

This Recommendation paper marks a collective first step. The signatories are committed to continuing this process by meeting and sharing insights, turning knowledge into action as we all race to reach net zero on time.

• Develop and enforce effective policies that accelerate the implementation of sustainable solutions.
• Enhance urban energy planning to support energy-efficient initiatives.
• Foster collaboration across the value chain, including industry, energy companies, cities, governments, and academia.
• Promote integration of sector coupling to optimize energy use.
• Invest in advanced heating and cooling systems for greater energy efficiency.
• Encourage public-private partnerships to drive innovation and implementation.
• Educate and engage communities on the importance of energy efficiency.
• Leverage technology and data analytics to monitor and improve energy performance.
• Provide financial incentives for adopting energy-efficient solutions.
• Advocate for international cooperation to share best practices and technologies.
